The split
Doing it yourself means you are the executive communications function for your own name. Hiring a ghostwriter means someone else prepares the draft, and you remain the person who decides, approves, and answers for it.
People compare these as if one were the serious path and the other a shortcut. That is the wrong cut. The cut is time and craft. Some leaders think clearly and also write clearly, and they protect an hour for it. Some leaders think clearly and lose the draft to the rest of the week. An executive writer is for the second group.
When to keep the draft
Keep the draft if you want the practice of saying the thing yourself, and you will actually do it. A short, specific note in your own hand is worth more than a polished piece you do not recognise.
Keep it if the company is still finding the message. A writer can make a muddled stance sound finished. That is not a kindness. Stay with the draft until you can say what you believe and what you will not claim. The thought leadership guide is the test for whether the stance is ready.
Keep it if you would resent reading, editing, or a second person in the sentence. The work only functions when you will read.
When to hand the draft over
Hand the draft over when the stance exists and the week keeps taking it. The writer's job is to stop the public line going quiet, and to stop it being thinned into something any peer could have signed.
Hand it over when you want an in-house style of working. A person close to the message, a record of how you explain a decision, and a pause before anything is public. That is executive content writing. It is not a promise that the writing will run without you.
The practical version of the public line for a startup CEO is the four pillars: stance, evidence from the work, one reader, and rhythm. If you cannot keep the rhythm, that is a reason to hire. If you do not have the stance, hiring will not produce one.
What does not move
Whether you draft or we draft, three things stay with you.
- The decision. The post should contain a choice you would defend.
- The limit. You still refuse a line that overclaims.
- The reply. A serious comment is part of the communication. A writer can prepare the ground. You are the person the reader came to hear.
Founder-led LinkedIn and X ghostwriting, when you want that help, is from $2,500 a month. Clients live within two weeks, with a 21-day get-out clause. The hiring guide is how to set the work up. The pricing page is the figure, with no second price beside it.
A false comparison
Do not choose by imagining a precise count of hours you will get back. We will not invent one. Do not choose by a claim that a hired writer is always steadier, or that writing it yourself is always truer. Steadiness without your judgement is a queue. Truth without a rhythm is a note you meant to publish.
Choose the arrangement you will still be inside next month. Then read the communications guide if the open question is the message itself, not who types it. If you are a fintech founder, the limits in the fintech guide belong in the brief either way.
